Recent work by two scientists at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) shows there are about 500,000 AIDS cases in Kenya, more than half of them in the port city of Mombasa.

"However, the people most affected by the disease originate from Nyanza [province in Western Kenya], whether they are in Mombasa, Nairobi [the capital] or Nyanza," says one of the researchers, David Tukei.

"We do not know whether this has to do with the province being next to Uganda," says Tukei.

Uganda has the highest number of AIDS cases in Africa. Kenya ranks seventh.
