A new case of AIDS is reported somewhere in the world every 18 seconds, according to the latest figures from the Pan-American Health Organization.

At the opening session of a regional seminar on AIDS and its impact on Central America, the organization said that although the spread of the disease is seemingly unstoppable, urgent measures must be adopted to prevent it and slow it down.

According to organization figures, up until December 10, 1992, a total of 537,000 AIDS cases had been officially reported in 163 countries.
