AS THE PLANET'S biggest producer of oil and the controller of its largest petroleum reserves, Saudi Arabia occupies centre stage in world affairs.

The kingdom's stability and prosperity in a volatile region owes much to the leadership of its kings and the smooth transition of power on the demise of a monarch.

Paying tribute to the late King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud, who died recently, Consul-General Alaudeen Alaskary said: "Over the past 20 years of his rule, the late king defied the odds to achieve his goals. Despite many challenges, King Fahd led the nation through a period of unparalleled growth and prosperity. He enhanced the position and influence of the kingdom internationally."
