A tireless opponent of Yunnan's Tiger Leaping Gorge dam project who gave his life to the cause was recognised yesterday in the country's first environmental protection awards sponsored by mainland businesses.

Anthropologist Xiao Liangzhong died in Beijing in January of exhaustion, one month after his 32nd birthday. Yesterday the Alxa See Ecological Association, founded by 80 entrepreneurs, posthumously awarded the campaigner its inaugural Special Prize.

Xiao's wife, Ma Qian , accepted the accolade on his behalf.
