For the first time since Health Canada began tracking retailer compliancy levels for illegal cigarette sales to teens, Canadian retailers have exceeded the Federal Tobacco Control Strategy's 10-year target objective of 80 percent compliance or greater.

The study, conducted by Health Canada, the federal department tasked to assist Canadian residents with maintaining and improving their health, found that retailers are 82.3 percent compliant in their efforts to refuse underage access to cigarettes among Canadian teens.

"I am very pleased with the results of this survey and I hope to see this trend continue," Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh said in a statement. "This increase is an encouraging sign that tobacco control measures are helping to reduce youth access to tobacco. I would like to thank the provinces and territories for their continued hard work in curbing tobacco use."
