On June 17, Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas signed into law legislation requiring all cigarettes sold in the state to be "fire-safe," meaning self-extinguishing, as of May 1, 2006.
The Rutland (Vt.) Herald reported that nearly 40 state residents were killed from cigarette-related fires in the past 10 years, and between 1999 and 2003, 15 of 65 fire deaths were attributed to cigarettes.
