Hip-hop music exerts a huge influence on today's college students. But many professors and administrators lack even the most basic knowledge about the music or its culture.
To better relate to the students they serve, educators can learn from and incorporate hip-hop into their offerings, two student affairs professionals advised at the 2005 NASPA conference in Tampa in March. Discussing the influence of hip-hop on millennial students were Chayla M. Haynes, associate director of orientation and family programs at George Mason University VA, and Dr. Lori D. Patton, assistant professor in educational leadership and policy studies at Iowa State University.
