A department led by and focused on women since its creation in 1970 will now have a man at the helm. The University of Washington has named Dr. David Allen as chair of the school's Women's Studies department.
The choice is surprising and unique, since Allen will be the only male to head of any of the country's 10 Women's Studies departments that award a doctoral degree.
Allen said he was offered the job because no qualified women wanted it. Washington sought a full professor as chair, and Allen is a full professor in the school of Nursing's department of psychosocial and community health. He has taught a research methods course in the Women's Studies department for 15 years, but he is not one of its 10 tenure-track members.
