Co-managers Thomas McKissick and John Snider demand that stocks added to their TCW Galileo Equities Fund have a proven earnings track record.
"We only buy companies with a history of success," said McKissick, 43. "But in current markets, for one reason or another, they'll be trading well below what we think their business is really worth."
The formula has led to a top 10 finish for the fund in the past five years compared with its large blend peers tracked by Morningstar.
The fund returned an average annual 2.52% heading into Monday vs. -2.29% for its peers and -2.82% for S&P 500.
