19 SEPTEMBER 2005 MAJURO (Pacnews) - A state of national emergency has been declared for ten days in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) following a fire at the capital atoll's only hospital on Friday (16 Sept).

Pharmaceutical and medical supply warehouses were destroyed as well as several other buildings, Yokwe news online reports.

Just hours after fire broke out, the Republic of the Marshall Islands' Cabinet met to take action. There was "grave emergency to the life and health of the patients of the hospital, and the general population of the nation," said the National Disaster Committee.
