WHEN OLIVER STONE'S epic Alexander failed in the cinemas, the director called a press conference to announce "it's not over". He was going to release a new version on DVD. Maybe it wouldn't have the sweep it had on the big screen but "it would be better".
Instead of an extended version, Stone has trimmed about half an hour, added alternative scenes, and placed his flashbacks at different stages, coming up with a tighter, more powerful version of what was always a fascinating film. In aiming this "director's cut" at the DVD market he seems to have anticipated the worldwide drop in cinema attendance attributed to the increase in DVD sales and hire. How successful ...
