SIR: Your editorial, "Pharisaical Compassion and the Lesser Evil" (July-August 2005), included a reference to the St Vincent de Paul Society that failed to inform but did not fail to baffle.
Any reading of the Vinnies Issues Paper on Income Inequality (www.vinnies.org.au) would reveal that:
(1) Income Inequality in Australia is growing.
(2) This is an ABS finding. It is not a "half-baked economic notion" or a product of "hatred of inequality".
(3) The paper explicitly states that it is not calling for income equality.
(4) Neither does it claim that income inequality is the only, or even the main, cause of deprivation in Australia.
(5) The paper does express concern that growing income inequality hinders the people assisted by Vinnies from participating in many of the opportunities to improve their own situations and the chances of their children.
