PROFESSOR Maurice Iwu was in church the other week at a thanksgiving service to mark his appointment as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The cleric at the service praised his commitment and excellence. Professor Iwu on his part had promised on his appointment to lay the foundations for a credible INEC, clearly an admission that INEC could do better.

About a month earlier, Professor Iwu had told INEC officials that the Commission was through with matters of the 2003 elections and was focusing on 2007. He was promptly reminded that some election petitions were still pending.
