Sep. 12--The opening of casinos in Thailand could offer a big opportunity to attract high-end, big-spending Asian tourists but would have no effect on bringing back foreign visitors who have opted to stay away because of the Dec 26 tsunami, says a travel industry executive.
Tourists will return to the beaches along the Andaman coast anyway, said Oliver Libutzki, senior contracting manager for Asia of TUI, Europe's largest tour operator.
"If the Thai government plans to allow and promote casinos, do it. But please do it away from the beaches," he added.
