With 2,862,949 full-text articles available online, JSTOR requires a powerful search engine to deliver quick results. The US-based archive of scholarly journals launched a new open source search engine in the spring to improve access to the 499 journals it hosts.

JSTOR provides access to journal content on the arts, business, ecology, language, literature, maths and music.

Lucene, a Java language open source search application from the Apache Foundation, was selected after six months of development.

Author, title and full text are the central keys of the search engine. JSTOR will be predominantly used by students, and has provided four quick search tips below the main window.
