Regular industry watchers could be forgiven for thinking that RSS is taking over the infosphere, given the amount of passion the technology is generating among industry analysts.
Recent research reveals that there is some way to go before this excitement is reflected in the general population. Forrester Research reported last month that only two per cent of adults in North America use RSS, while a survey by Nielsen/Netratings of blog readers in the US (who one might suppose would be reasonably RSS-savvy) found that just 11 per cent use RSS - while 66 per cent either did not use the technology or had never heard of it.
UK data is harder to come by, but web monitoring firm Market Sentinel reported in May that BT was the only one of the FTSE 100 to use RSS to syndicate news releases.
This uncertainty probably explains why Microsoft recently announced that it is going to rename the RSS component in the next version of Internet Explorer with 'web feeds', ...
