The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is investigating whether government agencies that sell public sector information, such as HM Land Registry, have an unfair competitive advantage over private sector information providers. Public sector information turnover in 2003 was in the region of [pounds sterling]1bn.
The OFT market study into public sector information holders (PSIH) will analyse whether the supply of public sector information is beneficial to business; and whether PSIHs have an unfair competitive advantage over companies which rely on PSIH raw data.
Dan Cookson, director of myhouseprice.com, an Edinburgh based organisation that provides house valuation reports welcomed the OFT investigation.
