EL PASO, Tex. -- Steffen E. "Steve" Palko, president and co-founder of XTO Energy, will be the commencement speaker at University of Texas at El Paso's spring 2005 commencement ceremonies May 7.
Palko, a 1971 UTEP graduate, will speak at both the 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. ceremonies at the Don Haskins Center.
The El Paso native, who worked part time at the University's Schellenger Research laboratory to support himself through school, founded Cross Timbers Oil Company with two partners in 1986. The company, headquartered in Fort Worth, has grown into a successful independent oil and gas exploration/production company with $2 billion total capitalization and revenues of over $500 million per year.
"The success I have achieved in life is in large measure due to the education I received in the El Paso public schools and at the University of Texas at El Paso," said Palko, a 1968 Andress High School graduate. "I am extremely grateful to the dedicated educators who molded my life and gave me the tools to compete."
