Angie Shattuck, who has been a diabetic since childhood, started having kidney problems and high blood pressure when she gave birth to her son, Kurt, 21 years ago. Her condition worsened over the years, and the possibility that she might someday need a kidney transplant became evident--so evident, that one year Kurt gave her a coupon she could redeem for one kidney.
"I was 13 and I wanted to get my mom something for Christmas," Kurt told a reporter for the Midland (Michigan) Daily News. "I've known for a long time that she was going to need a kidney one day."
