PRAGUE, June 1 (CTK) - The Association of Czech Towns and Villages has proposed that former mayors of towns and municipalities receive a life time annuity, the daily Pravo writes today.

The proposal was supported by a majority of representatives of the association at its general meeting which took place last week, but it does not have clear support among legislators, the paper says.

Oldrich Vlasak, the association chairman and former mayor of Hradec Kralove, east Bohemia, who is a member of the senior opposition Civic Democrats (ODS) and an MEP, has also supported the proposal.

The association explained its proposal by the fact that mayors usually work for the sake of municipalities regardless of holidays and that they lose their professional qualifications in the post, the paper says.

Mayor of the Prague-Letnany neighbourhood Josef Dobry (senior government Social Democrats, CSSD) says, for instance, that the amount of the annuity should be based on the number of years in the post of mayor or on the fact whether the mayor was simultaneously involved in business activities.
