LOS ANGELES -- California Attorney General BILL LOCKYER on Friday sued nine makers of French fries and potato chips, including MCDONALD'S CORP., BURGER KING CORP., KFC CORP. and WENDY'S INTERNATIONAL INC., seeking a court order to require them to warn consumers that those products contain acrylamide, which the state classifies as a cancer-causing chemical. Filed in county Superior Court here, Lockyer's complaint alleges the companies have violated Proposition 65, a ballot initiative enacted by voters in 1986, which requires businesses to provide "clear and reasonable" warnings before exposing people to known carcinogens or reproductive toxins.
