The S&P 500 climbed 0.1% Thursday as the Dow industrials dropped 0.2%. Trade decreased.
Oil-and-gas industry stocks advanced for the third session in a row following Hurricane Katrina. Analysts say it could take several months to get industry in the Gulf of Mexico back to pre-storm levels.
Anadarko Petroleum climbed 1.45 to 92.32 in heavier-than-normal trade. The stock is up 13% from its June breakout. It's been finding support at its 10-week moving average.
On the heels of Wednesday's 10% rise, Valero Energy gained 3, closing at 109.50 in nearly four times normal turnover. The refiner said Thursday that electric power had been restored at its St. Charles, La., facility. Of the plant's 550 workers, 120 were back on the job.
