Crisis Worsens In New Orleans
1Fights and fires broke out, corpses lay in the open, and rescue copters were shot at as flooded New Orleans descended into anarchy. Mayor Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS" for aid. National Guardsmen poured in to help restore order. Over 25,000 victims remained trapped in the city without food and water. FEMA's chief said the disaster may have killed thousands. Bush Eyes $10.5 Bil For Hurricane
2The Senate and House, returning early from recess, were to vote on the initial disaster aid request by Fri. The funds will go mostly to FEMA. President Bush will tour the hurricane-hit area Fri. He asked his father and ex-President Clinton to oversee private fundraising for victims. They helped raise $1 bil-plus in private donations for victims of Dec.'s tsunami. More on this page
Gas Shortages Grow, Prices Rise
3Shortages were reported at gas stations in Atlanta, N. Carolina, W. Virginia, Wisconsin and Arizona due to disrupted gasoline output and delivery after Hurricane Katrina. Gasoline prices soared above $3 a gallon in many states. Oct. gasoline rose 15.37 cents to $2.409 a gallon. Oct. crude rose 53 cents to $69.47 a barrel. More on this page
