A SPECIAL service of mass and prayers was held at Northampton Cathedral to mark the extraordinary life of Pope John Paul II, who died on Saturday, aged 84.
The doors to the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate and St Thomas of Canterbury in Barrack Road, Northampton, were left open 24 hours a day so worshippers could offer their prayers.
As news of Pope John Paul's death was announced on Saturday evening, the cathedral held a special mass for the "repose of his soul".
Father John Udris said: "The mood of people at mass over this weekend has been very peaceful. We have been celebrating Easter and the Pope's sickness did not affect the occasion as he himself was a man of joy.
"However, I could sense the feeling that he was being remembered by the congregation." "The Pope was a man of God, a man of peace and a man of the people.
