RAIL USERS in Northampton are campaigning to reinstate a GBP300 million train line to Bedford, 40 years after it closed.
The service would be an extension of the Thameslink line and could provide an alternative route into central London.
Members of Northampton Rail Users Group have joined forces with Bedford Railway and Transport Association to lobby train operators and the Government to reopen the line as an electrified railway.
Initial figures estimate it could cost between GBP275 to GBP300 million to get the line operational with trains running at 75mph over an estimated 22 mile journey Patrick Rawlinson, of Northampton Rail Users Group, said the line would be a huge boost to the town because current transport links were already over-stretched.
He added: "Northampton is expanding and there will probably be an extra 40,000 homes built. The West Coast Mainline and the M1 are at full capacity. Where is Northampton going? We are second fiddle to the rest of the system." The Bedford line would also ...
