(From Northampton Chronicle and Echo)
THE widow of a soldier who lives in Northamptonshire has successfully changed the law so her late husband's pension will benefit their children.
Lorna Brumpton, aged 34, who lives in Wayside, Roade, has two children, Jamie, aged 12, and Bradley, aged 10, from her marriage to Leigh Keeber.
Mr Keeber died aged 28 in 2001 from a reaction between medication and alcohol and an Army pension of GBP26 per month was paid to Mrs Brumpton, towards maintenance of their children.
However, the money was classified as income by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) which subtracted the amount when it calculated housing benefits.
Mrs Brumpton contacted South Northants Council, which could not help, and finally turned to Labour MP for Northampton South Tony Clarke in January this year.
He met the ODPM and the Department of Work and Pensions who agreed to change the legislation so the pension will be ignored in future calculations.
