LIBERAL Democrats fighting to take control of Northamptonshire County Council focused on the party's national campaign to "axe the tax" when they launched their local manifesto last night.
Members of the party from across Northamptonshire stood on the steps of County Hall with a large wooden axe as they backed party leader Charles Kennedy's call to axe council tax and replace it with a local income tax.
Northampton Borough Council member, Councillor Andrew Simpson (Lib-Dem, Kingsley), who will fight for the Northampton North seat in the General Election, said: "We want to make the tax system fairer by scrapping the council tax and making sure people know exactly what their money is being spent on." He was backed by county councillor Malcolm Mildren (Lib-Dem, Middleton Cheney) who defected from the Conservatives to join the Lib-Dems earlier this year.
