(From Northampton Chronicle and Echo)
TOUGH new targets have been announced at County Hall to fill more than 660 vacant school governor posts in Northamptonshire.
Education officials at the new Conservative-controlled county council want to slash the vacancy from the current 13.5 per cent vacancy rate to 10 per cent by September 2007.
The county council have faced an on-going battle to recruit parents and people from the community to sit on the governing bodies in Northampton and Corby, which have vacancy rates higher than the county average.
Out of the total figure, 89 posts need to be filled in schools in Northampton, with 37 in Corby.
Councillor Joan Kirkbride (Con,Bugbrooke), the new cabinet member for children's service, said the role was an opportunity for parents to help lead the schools.
She said: "We are particularly keen to get more governors in Northampton and Corby and are asking headteachers to encourage people to come forward where the vacancy rates are higher.
