The honour of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service should have been dedicated to Muslim lawyer Somchai Neelaphaijit and his family who fought for Muslim's people's rights in the deep South, said the 21st Ramon Magsaysay winner from Thailand, Jon Ungphakorn.

"Giles, my youngest brother, was approached for information about me during the nomination process. Giles asked whether it would be possible not to nominate me, but to nominate Somchai Neelaphaijit instead.

"I could not agree with my brother more. Unfortunately, the regulations do not allow for posthumous nominations," Mr Jon said.
