(From Czech News Agency)
PRAGUE, June 1 (CTK) - Christian Democrat (KDU-CSL) chairman Miroslav Kalousek is right, saying that the Czech government should suspend the campaign on the EU constitution after the French "no" and wait until the EU decides on further steps, Martin Komarek writes in Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) today.
He recalls that the Civic Democrat (ODS) chairman Mirek Topolanek, as well as President Vaclav Klaus, former ODS long- term leader, call on the cabinet to terminate the "useless" campaign, while PM Jiri Paroubek (Social Democrats, CSSD), on the contrary, stubbornly insists that the campaign must go on.
Komarek says that there are arguments both for the campaign on the constitution to continue and against it. In such a case the matter should be seriously considered, which is exactly what the KDU-CSL proposes.
The heads of the 25 EU member states will meet in mid-June to decide what to do after the French rejection of the EU constitution. If they decided to continue with the ratification, the Czech Republic should go ahead, but if not, it would be useless to organise a Czech referendum on it.
"The problem with the EU constitution is not a Czech but an EU problem. And the Union itself and not Mr Klaus, Topolanek or Paroubek on their own initiative must solve it," Komarek stresses.
It is meaningful to continue with the ratification. However, voters in the EU member states should get a clear answer to the question about a possible solution to the crisis, which the French vote has stirred up.
