NYSE stocks dipped in the first few hours of the session Wednesday, but finished near their intraday highs. The Dow rose 0.7%, the S&P 500 1% on higher volume. The small-cap S&P 600 rallied 2.1%.

Building and oil/gas-related stocks were among the day's top gainers. Home builders got a lift as the 10-year Treasury yield fell.

Homex Development rose 2.68, or 10%, to 30.06 on its second heaviest trade since its late June 2004 debut. Among other builders, Brookfield Homes gained 2.45 to a closing high of 51.20 and William Lyon Homes 5.72 to 150.15, a new high.

*Beazer Homes USA added 3.10 to 62.44 on above-average volume, ending above its 50-day line for the first time this week.
