Blogs are growing up.
It took time for people to let blogs, short for Web logs, into their lives. But now that these personal online journals have been around for several years, they're really taking off as a communication medium. So says Dan Hess, an analyst for research firm comScore Networks.
A comScore survey released in August found nearly 50 million Americans, or about 30% of total U.S. Internet users, visited blog sites in the first quarter of this year. That's a jump of 45% from the year-earlier quarter.
The survey, sponsored also by software maker Six Apart and online media company Gawker Media, found that blogs attract specific audiences.
Of the 400 largest blogs tracked, the survey found political blogs were the most popular, followed by "hipster" lifestyle blogs, tech blogs and blogs written by women.
Compared with typical Net users, blog readers tend to come from wealthier households with incomes of more than $75,000, comScore found. They also tend to be younger and are likely to connect to the Web via broadband connections.
