Mayor Fears Thousands Killed
1New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, estimating that up to 100,000 failed to evacuate the city before Hurricane Katrina hit, said he feared that thousands died. The official death toll is less than 100. Thousands who took refuge in the Superdome were bused to Houston's Astrodome. The Red Cross said its shelters are caring for over 45,000 left homeless. Rescuers continued to pull hundreds of people from flooded areas.
Oil Rally Chilled By SPR Supply
2 Oct. crude fell 87 cents to $68.94 a barrel after the government said it would lend oil from the strategic reserve. But Oct. gasoline rose 5.56 cents to $2.2553 a gallon while the expiring Sept. contract swelled 14 cents to $2.6145. Storm damage to refineries and strong demand are expected to push gasoline over $3 a gallon.

3President Bush viewed the damage by air, later calling Katrina one of the worst U.S. national disasters ever. He warned recovery "will take years" and the impact will be felt beyond the storm's path. Gov't aid included 400 trucks carrying water, meals, tarp and other goods, and 28 urban, swift-water and other rescue teams. The Coast Guard rescued nearly 2,000 people, Bush said.
