Section: Economy - Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra saw it necessary to revise the economic restructuring plan since fuel prices had surged much higher than expected, disclosed Ampon Kittiampon, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).
Speaking after a meeting of the board on enhancing competitiveness, he said the premier, who acted as the chairman, wanted the NESDB to revise the economic restructuring scheme.
The scheme was proposed in January when the oil prices stayed around US$30-40 per barrel. But at present the prices are much higher than before.
Because of this, he said, the premier called on the revision of the scheme in the following: First is to reduce the reliance on oil imports. Currently, the fuel shipment represents 70 per cent of the country's total imports.
