(From Thai Press Reports)
Section: Business News - European canned sweet corn producers have threatened to seek an anti-dumping investigation of products from Thailand, the world's fourth largest exporter, the Bangkok Post reports.
France and Hungary, two of the largest sweet corn producers, have complained that cheaper products from Thailand have affected local producers and their market shares, and want trade authorities to launch an anti-dumping investigation.
Some producers are seeking penalty duties of 15-20% on Thai exports to the European market, said Roj Burusratanabhand, president of River Kwai International Food Industry Co (RKI), the country's largest canned sweet corn exporter.
The EU is the country's largest market for canned sweet corn, accounting for 62% of total exports worth 2.7 billion baht last year.
Mr. Roj flew to France last night to discuss the issue with French producers in the hope that they would relent.
"We (Thai exporters) have agreed to urge French producers to give us six months to solve the price-cutting problem among Thai exporters. Some exporters do not intend to cut their prices. They simply lack information on the prices in the EU market," Mr. Roj said.
