Levant Cottons The so-called Levant cotton belonged to the typical form of G. herbaceum, called persium. Hutchinson describes the characteristics of the crop: "Small, annual sub-shrubs, with stiff stems and few or no vegetative branches." Twigs and leaves sparsely hairy or glabrous. Leaves large, almost fleshly, very broad lobed (not more than half cut), flat.
