Aug. 31--Local drivers reeled Tuesday from a sharp increase in gas prices in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, but experts warn prices could go higher.
In Beaufort County on Tuesday, consumers saw prices spike as much as 25 cents a gallon at some stations. The increase came just a day after Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast and days before the Labor Day holiday, one of the peak travel weekends of the year.
The increases prompted AAA Carolinas to warn that gas prices are starting to affect travel plans, with the number of Labor Day weekend travelers expected to drop for the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Tuesday's rapid price hikes left consumers scratching their heads.
