Monster Rods going on display.

Aug. 26--A conversation with Michael Leeds and Randy Grubb, the self-described Blastolene Brothers, is an ethereal experience.

"We're a very small, but very necessary part of society -- the provocateurs," said Leeds, 59, of Santa Cruz.

"We do it to see the mind-blowing reaction on people's faces," said Grubb, 44, of Grants Pass, Ore.

Leeds and Grubb are former glass artists who progressed into creating super-sized, hand-built hot rods. These so-called Monster Rods will be on display this weekend in Pleasanton at the 19th Goodguys West Coast Nationals.

Leeds built Big Bertha, a five-ton dual-cowl boat-tail roadster with a 1,000-cubic-inch propane-burning V-12 engine. Grubb made the Blastolene Special, a 35-foot-long …
