Aug. 24--No wonder commuters hate the back-to-school traffic nightmare.
Thursday, almost 300,000 public-school students -- and their cars and buses -- will be added to the morning rush hour in Mecklenburg, Gaston, Union, Cabarrus, Catawba and Iredell counties.
Parents face two deadlines: dropping the kids off at school on time and then getting themselves to work. Extra traffic can stack up on any road that carries a school bus, from interstates to country roads.
"Suddenly you've got 1,000 people all trying to get to the same school at the same time -- parents, students, teachers, buses -- and the regular commuters driving by," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Officer Dennie Crowder, who deals with south Charlotte traffic.
