President Bush has nominated John G. Roberts Jr., who has been a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for just two years, to fill the first Supreme Court vacancy of his presidency, replacing retiring justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Critics immediately labeled him a far-right corporate lawyer who has done much to damage the environment, and oppose women and free speech, claiming:

* He argued that Roe vs. Wade, the decision that women have a right to abortion, "should be overruled."
