MANY tried but failed.

It was left to an 19-year-old to create history for Malaysia.

Esther Cheah, who is making her debut in the bowling World Championships, delivered Malaysia's first ever individual gold medal in Aalborg, Denmark, last night.

Esther, who turned 19 on March 31, was bowling in the final of the five squads together with Shalin Zulkifli and against all odds, pipped China's Zhang Yuhong to the gold with her 1,296 effort over six games.

To make an it eventful day for Malaysia, southpaw Lai Kin Ngoh won the bronze medal in the All-Events.

Esther the only daughter of former national bowler and coach, Holloway, showed courage and determination to bag the title.

Esther missed pin three in the ninth frame of the final game and needed a minimum of 197 to clinch the gold.

She had to spare the 10th frame and that added more pressure.
