BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. _ You've heard "Dueling Banjos." You might have seen Dueling Brandos _ John Belushi and Peter Boyle _ on "Saturday Night Live." Brace yourselves for Dueling Cagneys.
Mickey Rooney, 84, and Oscar-winner Red Buttons, 86, are trying to top each other by impersonating screen legend James Cagney. The bubbly Buttons seems to have the edge with the "you dirty rat" routine. But everyone is firing off one-liners this afternoon.
After Rooney talks fondly of old Hollywood, Buttons asks, "By the way, Mickey, was Lincoln a nice guy?"
The putdowns flow as the old-timers promote "Pioneers of Primetime," a PBS special for November. PBS has assembled a starry but unusual panel to talk to the nation's television critics.
Rooney and Buttons don't appear in the badly arranged documentary, which could use their Dueling Cagneys. The panel is better than the program.
