March 3, 1959: Pioneer 4 is the first U.S. probe to fly by the moon.

May 25, 1961: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth." _President Kennedy in a special message to Congress on urgent national needs

1961-65: Ranger program sends nine missions to the moon. It is the first U.S. attempt to get close-up images of the moon's surface.

July 14, 1965: Mariner 4 is the first successful flyby of Mars, returning the first pictures of the planet's surface.
