Telstra will have to maintain its operations in the bush after it is fully privatised, under plans to be unveiled by the federal government.

Communications Minister Helen Coonan and Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile will announce the new requirements for Telstra during a visit to the NSW north coast town of Kendall.

The government plans to impose a new condition in Telstra's operating licence which will ensure that it maintains a presence in rural and regional areas after the commonwealth sells its remaining stake in the telco.
