The physical makeover is only half the battle. Now itis time for Mikale Lichota, April Joy Varner, and Kate Schmidt to tackle the psychological obstacles to their diets. Stephen Gullo, a New York City weight-loss specialist, showed Lichota and Varner how to resist temptation and celebrate success without the usual cake and champagne. Schmidt learned to conquer her most daunting cravings with the help of Manhattan weight-loss physician Howard M. Shapiro and Linda Charnes, family therapist at Howard M. Shapiro Medical Associates. "The winners at weight control do not have more willpower than those who fail," Gullo says. "They have better strategies."
