Aug. 4--The government's tobacco monopoly and three foreign cigarette sellers called on the government to rescind its ban on public display of cigarette packets in stores, arguing that putting tobacco under the counter would rapidly increase cheap, harmful counterfeit brands rather than reduce the number of smokers.
"The order is a violation of the rights of consumers, sellers and cigarette manufacturers," said Praputsorn Pongpanpisand, spokesperson of the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly, a state enterprise.
