(From Belfast Telegraph)
Byline: David Gordon
Environment Minister Lord Rooker was today facing a growing revolt over a move to curtail the ability of councils to defer planning decisions.
The clampdown is aimed at cutting delays in the planning system, which has experienced a massive increase in its workload in recent years.
It will prevent councils from deferring decisions on planning applications on more than one occasion.
There will also be a significant reduction in the number of site meetings - where councillors and applicants or objectors hold discussions with planning officials at the location of proposed developments.
Ulster Unionist and Alliance politicians have been among those to strongly criticise the Minister's announcement.
