BOXINGBoxing legend Hearns fails to impress in winning return:
Former seven-time world champion Thomas 'Hit Man' Hearns shook off the ring rust of a five-year layoff by registering a technical knockout over John Long. Hearns posted a ninth-round victory over journeyman Long in their non-title cruiserweight fight at Cobo Arena. "This is just the start, I plan to keep fighting a long time," Hearns said. The 46-year-old American Hearns got the TKO win when Long (19-7-1) did not come out for round nine. He floored Long once in the sixth round. But Hearns looked a shadow of his former championship self as he struggled to find his form and was staggered in the opening round. Hearns said he would like three or four fights to regain prime fighting shape before challenging for a light heavyweight world title.
BASEBALL Yankees rally past Angels on Matsui double: Hideki Matsui's two-run double in the ninth inning capped a big comeback, and the New York Yankees took advantage of four walks by an exhausted Francisco Rodriguez to beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-7 in American League action.
