Aug. 2--Surging oil and food prices and higher public transport costs drove inflation last month to 5.3 percent year-on-year, the highest since October 1998.
The headline inflation rate was up 3.8 percent from the previous month and 3.1 percent from July 2004, according to the Commerce Ministry,.
Karun Kittisataporn, the ministry's permanent secretary, attributed the rise primarily to oil prices.
