Steel, auto makers baulk at tariff cuts: Ford expansion plans to be reviewed.
Aug. 2--Non-Japanese automakers and steel producers voiced disappointment after Thai negotiators announced that the country would cut tariffs for Japanese imports under the Thailand-Japan free trade area.
Negotiators yesterday announced that Thailand had agreed to cut import tariffs for automobiles with large engines to 60 percent from 80 percent by 2009. Auto parts imported from Japan would also have tariffs phased down to zero by 2011 from 10 percent to 40 percent now.
Imports of Japanese steel unavailable or in short supply locally would see tariffs cut to zero immediately after the agreement, while hot-rolled steel and other categories would see liberalisation phased in over eight to 10 years. Steel tariffs are currently 5 ...
